  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ cups (170 g) shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • ¾ cup (180 ml) cold buttermilk
  • 6 tablespoons (85 g) unsalted butter, melted and divided
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • Optional: pinch of cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
  3. Stir in the shredded sharp cheddar cheese until evenly distributed.
  4. Pour in the cold buttermilk and 4 tablespoons melted unsalted butter. Stir gently until just combined; do not overmix.
  5. Drop mounds of dough (about ¼ cup or 60 ml each) onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing about 2 inches apart.
  6. Bake for 12-15 minutes until tops are golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. While baking, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons butter in a small bowl. Stir in garlic powder and chopped parsley.
  8. Brush the garlic butter glaze generously on the biscuits as soon as they come out of the oven.
  9. Serve warm.

Notes

Use cold buttermilk for best rise and tender crumb. Do not overmix dough to avoid tough biscuits. Freshly shred cheddar cheese for better melt and flavor. Brush garlic butter glaze immediately after baking for best flavor. For gluten-free, substitute all-purpose flour with gluten-free flour blend. For dairy-free, use plant-based butter and milk alternatives.
