Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices thick-cut white bread or Texas toast (day-old or slightly stale)
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 3/4 cup (180 ml) whole milk or 2% milk (or dairy-free milk like oat or almond)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, for frying
  • Cinnamon Sugar Coating:
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • Maple Drizzle:
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Slice thick bread slices into 1-inch wide sticks, about 6 sticks per slice. Set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon until smooth.
  3. In a shallow bowl, combine granulated sugar and ground cinnamon for the cinnamon sugar coating.
  4. Heat skillet over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon butter. Add remaining 2 tablespoons butter before frying each batch.
  5. Dip each bread stick into the egg mixture for about 5 seconds per side, then roll in cinnamon sugar coating to coat evenly.
  6. Fry coated sticks in the hot skillet in batches, about 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy. Flip carefully with tongs.
  7. Transfer cooked sticks to a cooling rack over a baking sheet to drain excess butter and keep crispy. Keep warm in a low oven if needed.
  8. In a small saucepan over low heat, warm maple syrup, butter, and cinnamon until butter melts and mixture is fragrant. Remove from heat.
  9. Arrange French toast sticks on a platter and drizzle with warm maple glaze. Serve immediately.

Notes

Use slightly stale bread for best soaking and frying results. Do not over-soak bread sticks to prevent falling apart. Fry in batches to maintain crispiness. Keep cooked sticks warm on a cooling rack in a low oven. Warm maple drizzle just before serving.
