These bite-sized Caprese skewers combine fresh mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, and basil with a sweet and tangy balsamic heart drizzle, perfect for quick appetizers or festive gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 small creamy fresh mozzarella balls (bocconcini), drained
  • 16 cherry or grape tomatoes, washed and patted dry
  • 16 fresh basil leaves, washed and dried
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 16 wooden skewers or toothpicks, about 4 inches long

Instructions

  1. Pour 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar into a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until it thickens and reduces by half (about 8-10 minutes). Remove from heat and stir in 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup if using. Set aside to cool slightly.
  2. Take a wooden skewer and thread one cherry tomato onto it. Fold a fresh basil leaf in half and add it, followed by a mozzarella ball. Repeat until all skewers are assembled.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil with a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  4. Arrange the skewers neatly on a serving platter. Brush or drizzle the olive oil dressing over them, then drizzle the balsamic glaze in heart shapes or zigzags.
  5. Sprinkle a little flaky sea salt over the top just before serving.

Notes

Dry tomatoes and basil leaves well to help the glaze stick better. Watch the balsamic reduction closely to avoid burning. Assemble skewers shortly before serving to keep basil fresh. Warm balsamic glaze gently if it firms up after cooling.
