classic mint julep recipe - featured image

A classic mint julep enhanced with a homemade fresh spearmint syrup for a silky, fragrant sweetness. Perfect for warm weather and easy to prepare in about 10 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup fresh spearmint leaves (packed) for syrup, plus extra sprigs for garnish
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 to 6 ounces bourbon whiskey per serving
  • Crushed ice
  • Optional garnish: fresh spearmint sprigs and lemon twist

Instructions

  1. Combine 1 cup granulated sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan. Heat over medium until sugar dissolves completely, about 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
  2. Add 1 cup fresh spearmint leaves to the hot syrup, stir gently to submerge. Cover and steep for 20 to 30 minutes.
  3. Strain syrup through a fine mesh sieve to remove leaves. Let cool completely before using. Refrigerate if storing.
  4. Fill a julep cup or short glass halfway with crushed ice. Add 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of fresh spearmint syrup.
  5. Pour 4 to 6 ounces (120–180 ml) bourbon over the ice and syrup. Stir gently with a bar spoon.
  6. Pack the glass full with crushed ice, mounding slightly on top.
  7. Garnish with a fresh spearmint sprig (slapped between palms to release oils) and optionally a lemon twist. Serve immediately.

Notes

Do not over-stir to preserve crushed ice texture. Use fresh, vibrant spearmint leaves. The syrup can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to two weeks. For a non-alcoholic version, omit bourbon and add sparkling water. Crushed ice is essential for authentic texture and chill.
