Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 gallon (3.8 liters) pure apple cider
  • 56 whole cinnamon sticks
  • 810 whole cloves
  • Strips of peel from 1 large orange
  • 23 star anise pieces (optional)
  • 1/4 cup (50 grams) packed brown sugar
  • 23 medium fresh apples, thinly sliced (Gala or Honeycrisp recommended)
  • Caramel sauce for drizzling
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Whipped cream or marshmallows for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the spices by bundling cinnamon sticks, cloves, and orange peel in cheesecloth or a tea infuser.
  2. Pour 1 gallon of apple cider into a large pot or slow cooker. Add the spice bundle and star anise pods.
  3. Stir in 1/4 cup brown sugar and optional 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  4. Set heat to low and simmer gently for 25–30 minutes until aromatic and small bubbles form around edges.
  5. While cider simmers, wash and thinly slice 2-3 apples and arrange in a bowl for garnish.
  6. Remove the spice bundle and star anise pods from the cider once warmed through.
  7. Transfer cider to a heatproof dispenser or keep warm in the slow cooker.
  8. Set up the bar with mugs, sliced apples, cinnamon sticks, caramel sauce, whipped cream, and other garnishes in separate bowls or jars.
  9. Ladle cider into mugs, add a cinnamon stick and a few apple slices to each cup.
  10. Allow guests to drizzle caramel sauce or add whipped cream as desired.
  11. Optional: Sprinkle ground cinnamon or nutmeg over whipped cream or top with mini marshmallows for extra flair.

Notes

Keep cider at a low simmer to avoid bitterness. Use a spice bundle for easy removal of spices. Prepare cider a day ahead for deeper flavor and reheat gently before serving. Adjust sweetness to taste. For adult gatherings, add bourbon, spiced rum, or apple brandy. Store leftover cider refrigerated up to 4 days. Avoid microwaving leftovers to preserve flavor.
