Learn how to make perfect hot cocoa bombs at home with this easy recipe. Smooth chocolate shells filled with cocoa mix and marshmallows that bloom open in hot milk for a cozy treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 ounces (about 340 grams) chocolate melting wafers or high-quality chocolate bars
  • 2 tablespoons (about 30 grams) hot cocoa mix per bomb
  • 1 tablespoon mini marshmallows per bomb
  • Optional: crushed peppermint candies, caramel bits, chocolate shavings, or a pinch of cinnamon
  • Optional: sprinkles or crushed candy canes for decoration

Instructions

  1. Melt the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring after each, until completely smooth.
  2. Using a pastry brush, paint a thin, even layer of melted chocolate inside each cavity of a silicone half-sphere mold. Apply two thin coats for extra strength, letting the first coat set for a minute before applying the second.
  3. Place the molds on a baking sheet and refrigerate for 10-15 minutes until the chocolate is firm and no longer shiny.
  4. Gently press on the bottom of each silicone cavity to pop the chocolate half-spheres out. Handle by the edges to avoid fingerprints.
  5. Fill one chocolate half-sphere with 2 tablespoons of hot cocoa mix, 1 tablespoon of mini marshmallows, and any optional add-ins.
  6. Heat a small non-stick skillet over low heat for about 30 seconds. Press the rim of an empty chocolate half-sphere onto the warm pan for 2-3 seconds until slightly melted and glossy. Immediately place it on top of the filled half, pressing gently to seal. Hold for a few seconds until the seal sets.
  7. Optional: Melt additional chocolate and drizzle over the sealed bombs using a piping bag or zip-top bag. Add sprinkles or crushed candy canes before the drizzle sets.
  8. Place the completed bombs in the refrigerator for 10 minutes to firm up decorations. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks.

Notes

Don’t rush the chocolate melting process. Work in a cool room to prevent shells from softening. Test one bomb before making a batch. Keep spare shells handy in case of cracking.
