A quick and easy creamy avocado tuna melt on sourdough toast that combines rich avocado, flaky tuna, and melted cheese for a satisfying and comforting meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (5 oz / 140 g) tuna packed in water, drained
  • 1 ripe avocado, mashed
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley or dill (optional)
  • 2 slices sourdough bread (thick-cut)
  • 12 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 2 slices cheese (sharp cheddar or pepper jack, optional)

Instructions

  1. Drain the tuna well to avoid excess liquid.
  2. In a mixing bowl, mash the ripe avocado with a fork or potato masher until creamy but slightly chunky.
  3. Add the drained tuna to the mashed avocado. Stir in mayonnaise (if using), lemon juice, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently to keep some tuna chunks intact. Fold in chopped herbs last.
  4. Butter one side of each slice of sourdough bread.
  5. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Place the bread butter-side down and toast until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.
  6. Flip the toasted bread, spread the tuna avocado mixture evenly over the non-toasted side, and top each slice with a slice of cheese.
  7. Return the skillet to medium-low heat. Place the assembled bread mixture side up in the skillet. Cover loosely with a lid or foil and cook for 3-5 minutes until the cheese melts and bread is toasted.
  8. Remove from skillet, let cool for a minute, then slice in half and serve.

Notes

Use fresh lemon juice to prevent avocado browning. Rotate sandwich halfway through cooking if skillet heats unevenly. Butter the bread outside for a golden crust. For dairy-free, skip cheese or use plant-based alternative. For gluten-free, substitute sourdough with gluten-free bread.
