Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup buffalo wing sauce
  • ½ cup ranch dressing
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 1 large round sourdough or artisan bread loaf (about 1012 inches in diameter)
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter, melted
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the bread bowl: Using a sharp knife, cut a circle about 2 inches from the edge of the top of the bread loaf. Carefully remove the top, creating a lid. Then, using your hands or a spoon, hollow out the inside of the bread, leaving about a 1-inch thick shell. Set the bread pieces aside for dipping or snacking later.
  3. Make the garlic butter: In a small bowl, combine the melted butter and garlic powder. Brush the inside of the hollowed bread bowl and the cut side of the lid with the garlic butter. Place the bread bowl and lid on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Toast the bread bowl: Bake the bread bowl and lid for 5-7 minutes, just until the edges are lightly golden and crisp. Remove from the oven and set aside.
  5. Make the buffalo chicken dip: In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, buffalo wing sauce, and ranch dressing. Beat with a hand mixer on medium speed until smooth and creamy. (If you don’t have a hand mixer, just stir vigorously with a spatula.)
  6. Add the chicken and cheese: Fold in the shredded chicken, ¾ cup of the cheddar cheese, and ¼ cup of the mozzarella cheese. Mix until everything is evenly combined.
  7. Fill the bread bowl: Spoon the buffalo chicken dip into the toasted bread bowl, packing it in evenly. Top with the remaining ¼ cup cheddar cheese and ¼ cup mozzarella cheese.
  8. Bake the stuffed bread bowl: Place the filled bread bowl (without the lid) on the baking sheet. Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until the dip is hot and bubbly and the cheese on top is melted and golden brown. If the top is browning too quickly, tent loosely with aluminum foil.
  9. Add the lid and garnish: During the last 2 minutes of baking, place the bread lid on the baking sheet to warm it up. Once done, remove everything from the oven. Sprinkle the sliced green onions over the top of the dip.
  10. Serve immediately: Place the bread bowl on a serving platter with the lid propped against it. Surround it with the reserved bread pieces, tortilla chips, or veggie sticks for dipping.

Notes

Don’t skip toasting the bread bowl to prevent sogginess. Use room temperature cream cheese for a smooth dip. Shred chicken finely for easier scooping. Let the dip rest for 2-3 minutes before serving to avoid burning your mouth.
