A quick and easy homemade ranch dressing made with fresh herbs, real buttermilk, and a creamy base that outshines store-bought versions with vibrant flavor and luscious texture.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ cup mayonnaise (120 ml), preferably full-fat
  • ½ cup buttermilk (120 ml) or homemade buttermilk (½ cup milk + 1 tbsp lemon juice or white vinegar, let sit 5 minutes)
  • ¼ cup sour cream (60 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, finely chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Prepare the herbs: rinse fresh dill, chives, and parsley. Pat dry and finely chop them (about 5 minutes).
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together ½ cup mayonnaise, ¼ cup sour cream, and ½ cup buttermilk until smooth (about 2 minutes).
  3. Add 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. Whisk to combine (about 1 minute).
  4. Stir in the chopped dill, chives, and parsley (about 1 minute).
  5. Add 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice and whisk again (about 30 seconds).
  6. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld and dressing to thicken.
  7. Before serving, taste and adjust seasoning. If too thick, stir in more buttermilk to loosen. Add extra salt or herbs as desired.

Notes

For best flavor, refrigerate at least 30 minutes before serving. Use fresh dill and chives for authentic taste; dried herbs can be used but reduce quantity by half. If dressing is too thick, thin with buttermilk rather than water. Avoid fresh garlic cloves to prevent bitterness; garlic powder provides mellow flavor. Store in airtight container in fridge up to 7 days. Shake or whisk before use as separation is natural.
