A quick and easy homemade taco seasoning mix made from simple pantry spices without preservatives, perfect for flavorful tacos and versatile for various dishes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon paprika (sweet or smoked)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano (preferably Mexican oregano)
  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon salt (sea salt or kosher salt)
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Optional: Toast the chili powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, and crushed red pepper flakes in a dry skillet over medium heat for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the spices.
  2. Transfer toasted spices to a small mixing bowl (skip to this step if not toasting).
  3. Add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper to the bowl.
  4. Mix all ingredients thoroughly with a whisk or fork until uniform in color and texture.
  5. Store the seasoning mix in an airtight container or jar. Label with the date and use within 3 months for best flavor.
  6. Use about 2 to 3 tablespoons of this mix per 1 pound (450 g) of ground meat or vegetables. Adjust seasoning to taste.

Notes

Toasting the spices before mixing releases oils and enhances aroma and flavor but can be skipped to save time. Adjust salt and crushed red pepper flakes to control sodium and spice levels. Store in a cool, dark place for up to 3 months. Fresh-ground spices improve flavor.
