A hands-off slow cooker cranberry sauce with fresh orange and ginger that’s perfect for holidays. Sweet, tangy, and spicy, this easy recipe is a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 ounces fresh or frozen cranberries (one standard bag)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice (about 2 oranges)
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 2 tablespoons fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Grand Marnier or bourbon (optional)
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep your ingredients: Wash cranberries and pick out any soft or shriveled ones. Zest the orange before juicing. Peel and grate the ginger using a microplane or fine side of a box grater.
  2. Combine everything in the slow cooker: Add cranberries, sugar, orange juice, orange zest, grated ginger, cinnamon stick, and a pinch of salt. Stir well.
  3. Cook on low for 3-4 hours: Cover and cook undisturbed. Around the 2-hour mark, cranberries will start popping.
  4. Check for doneness: After 3 hours, stir. Cranberries should be soft and sauce thick enough to coat a spoon. If too thin, cook another 30-60 minutes with lid off.
  5. Adjust sweetness and flavor: Taste and add more sugar or maple syrup if needed. Add more ginger if desired.
  6. Remove the cinnamon stick.
  7. Cool and serve: Let sauce cool completely in slow cooker. It will thicken as it cools. Serve warm, at room temperature, or cold.

Notes

The sauce will look thin when hot but thickens as it cools. Make ahead for best flavor. Fresh ginger is non-negotiable. Do not over-stir.
