A refreshing and easy-to-make drink combining fresh strawberries, basil, lime juice, and a touch of sweetener for a bright, hydrating boost perfect for hot days.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced (about 300 grams)
  • 1012 fresh basil leaves, washed and torn
  • 4 cups cold water (950 ml)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice (about one medium lime)
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons honey, agave syrup, or simple syrup (to taste)
  • Ice cubes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash the strawberries and basil leaves thoroughly. Hull and slice the strawberries into quarters. Tear the basil leaves into smaller pieces.
  2. In a blender, combine the sliced strawberries, torn basil leaves, and 1 cup (240 ml) of cold water. Pulse or blend on medium speed until smooth.
  3. Optional: Pour the puree through a fine mesh strainer into a large pitcher to remove seeds and pulp.
  4. Add the remaining 3 cups (710 ml) of cold water and 2 tablespoons (30 ml) fresh lime juice to the pitcher. Stir well to combine.
  5. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of your preferred sweetener and stir until fully dissolved. Adjust sweetness and lime juice to taste.
  6. Chill the agua fresca in the fridge or serve immediately over ice cubes. Garnish with extra basil leaves or a strawberry slice if desired.

Notes

If you prefer a chunkier texture, muddle the strawberries and basil by hand instead of blending. Straining is optional but recommended for a smoother drink. Adjust sweetness after dilution to avoid oversweetening. Use fresh lime juice for best flavor. The drink keeps up to 24 hours refrigerated; stir before serving. For a fizzy twist, replace half the water with sparkling water.
