A light and cozy slow cooker chili made with ground turkey, sweet potatoes, black beans, and kidney beans in a smoky, spiced tomato broth. Perfect for busy weeknights or meal prep, this comforting dish is naturally creamy without any dairy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground turkey (93% lean)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced (about 1 cup)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed (about 3 cups, ½-inch cubes)
  • 1 can (15 oz) fire-roasted diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon ground coriander
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)
  • Greek yogurt or sour cream (for garnish)
  • Diced avocado (for garnish)
  • Shredded cheddar cheese (for garnish)
  • Lime wedges (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground turkey and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until no longer pink and browned, about 6 to 8 minutes.
  2. Add diced onion to the skillet and cook for 2 minutes until softened. Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Sprinkle chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, oregano, coriander, salt, pepper, and cayenne (if using) over the turkey mixture. Stir constantly for about 30 seconds to toast the spices.
  4. Transfer the turkey mixture to a slow cooker. Add cubed sweet potatoes, fire-roasted diced tomatoes (with juices), tomato sauce, drained black beans, drained kidney beans, and chicken broth. Stir to combine.
  5. Cover and cook on LOW for 6 to 7 hours or on HIGH for 3 to 4 hours, until sweet potatoes are tender.
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning, adding more salt or a squeeze of lime juice if needed.
  7. Ladle into bowls and garnish with cilantro, Greek yogurt, avocado, cheese, and lime wedges as desired.

Notes

For a thicker chili, mash some sweet potatoes against the side of the slow cooker before serving. This chili tastes even better the next day. To make it vegetarian/vegan, swap turkey for 2 cups cooked lentils or crumbled tempeh and use vegetable broth.
