This 5-ingredient cranberry orange sauce with fresh rosemary is bright, balanced, and ready in 20 minutes. It’s naturally gluten-free and vegan, and perfect for holiday meals or everyday use.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 oz (340 g) fresh cranberries (1 standard bag)
  • 1 large orange (zest and juice; about 1 tbsp zest and ½ cup juice)
  • ⅓ cup (80 ml) pure maple syrup
  • 12 sprigs fresh rosemary
  • Pinch of flaky sea salt

Instructions

  1. Prep your orange: Wash the orange, then zest to get about 1 tablespoon of zest. Cut the orange in half and juice to get about ½ cup of juice. Set both aside.
  2. Rinse the cranberries: Rinse fresh cranberries in a colander under cold water. Discard any soft, shriveled, or stemmed berries.
  3. Combine everything in the saucepan: In a medium saucepan, add the rinsed cranberries, orange juice, orange zest, maple syrup, and a pinch of salt. Stir to combine. Tuck the fresh rosemary sprigs into the mixture whole.
  4. Bring to a boil: Place the saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir occasionally. Once the mixture comes to a full boil, reduce the heat to medium-low.
  5. Simmer and pop: Let the sauce simmer gently for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until most cranberries have burst and the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  6. Remove the rosemary: Using tongs or a fork, remove the rosemary sprigs. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed (add more maple syrup if too tart, or a squeeze of lemon if too sweet).
  7. Cool and serve: Let the sauce cool in the saucepan for about 10 minutes, then transfer to a serving bowl. It will continue to thicken as it cools. Serve warm, at room temperature, or cold.

Notes

The sauce thickens as it cools. For a smoother sauce, strain out the zest bits. The sauce tastes even better after a day or two in the fridge. To freeze, cool completely and store in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Reheat gently on the stovetop or microwave.
